Anamit Sen drove the new Verna all over town, to ascertain what Hyundai's latest offering is all about.
The word fluid is interesting as it can be used both as a noun as well as an adjective. As a noun, it means a continuous, amorphous substance in which molecules move freely and past one another and that has the tendency to assume the shape of its container for example, a liquid or a gas. As an adjective, it has more than one meaning –
a) Of, relating to, or characteristic of a fluid b) Readily reshaped or pliable. c) Smooth and flowing; graceful are just a few. Fluid certainly exists as a word as does fluid-like. But what about 'Fluidic'? My sudden interest in the word came about with Hyundai launching the Fluidic Verna recently which embodies the Korean manufacturer's new design philosophy of ‘Fluidic Sculpture’. Twenty days after the launch, Hyundai has received 10,000 bookings for the car.

The Verna was initially launched in India in 2006 and has proved itself since with many a happy customer in the upper mid size car segment in India. In June 2010 in a bid keep consumer interest in the Verna alive, Hyundai launched a face lifted Verna, calling it the all new Verna Transform, a ‘Dynamic by DNA’ luxury sedan. It featured ‘sharp eye’headlamps, a new bumper design with a cascade mesh’ air dam along with circular front fog lamps in trapezoidal bezels make it much safer and easier to drive during the foggy winters. This was complemented by LED turn indicators on the door mirrors while on the inside, blue LED illumination was introduced in the cockpit. Despite all the largely cosmetic changes however the Verna Transform remained just a facelift.
Barely a year later, there is a new Verna in the showrooms and it's a very different beast – the wheelbase of the new car is now 2570mm from 2500m earlier and the dimensions are now 4370mm (Length), 1700mm (Length) and 1475mm (Height), compared to the 4310mm, 1695mm and 1475mm of the outgoing model. The looks of the new Verna are certainly interesting – one will either love it or hate it. Me, I'm undecided as of now. The Fluidic Sculpture Design Philosophy. Has resulted in a rather futuristic design with a lot of dynamic lines. It starts with the bonnet with a hexagonal grille below it along with ‘L’ shaped fog lamps and carries on to the side profile which is coupe-like. There is a lot of detail in this car compared to the earlier model and one has to wonder whether damage repair will be more complicated and hence costlier compared to the earlier car. The exterior is completed by a chrome plated 2 tone rear garnish and a new tail lamp cluster. There is a choice in rim designs and tyre sizes depending upon the variant.
